How To Choose A Career If You're Not College Bound

Blog

Did you try college and decide it just wasn't the place where you wanted to spend hours and hours and even years of your time? Perhaps you graduated from high school with the full knowledge that you would never go to college in the first place. Maybe you wanted to go to college and the money just wasn't there. For whatever reason, you still know that you will need a career that will do two major things for you. Not necessarily in this order, the two things you probably want in your career are money and enjoyment. If you wake up every morning dreading the day, that's a pretty sad thing. However, if you select a vocation that makes you feel fulfilled and happy, you are indeed a lucky person. From apprenticing to CDL training, here are some ideas that might inspire you.

Apprenticing - If you already have a talent for certain things, you might be able to turn that gift into a career. For example, are you a good cake decorator? If so, take pictures of work you've done and show it to the manager at a bakery, with the idea of apprenticing as you continue to learn. The same goes for flower arranging. Take pictures of flower arrangements you have already created and apprentice at a floral shop. While neither of those occupations start you off with a huge salary, they can definitely develop into a job with a good living, especially if you someday go into business for yourself.

Special Training - What do you enjoy? Perhaps it's something like computers or working with cars. Take the expertise you already have and polish it at a trade school. You'll get on-the-job training with instructors who will prepare you to work in your chosen field. Have you ever been on a trip and envied the truck drivers that go all over the country? If so, consider getting your commercial driver's license so that you can join the great force of truck drivers. The great part of CDL training is that it only takes a few weeks to complete. In fact, you can still work at your present job and take your training as a part-time student. Like trade school, CDL training offers help in job placement after you finish the program. You'll get in-class instruction and then on the road training with gifted instructors.

trade schools to build on your degree

These days, it is harder to find a job doing what you have gone to college for. I went to school for graphic design and thought that I would easily be able to find a job doing what I went to school for. Unfortunately, the field is flooded with graphic design artists, which makes it very hard to get a job. I have since completed a course at a local trade school that has opened up many doors for my career. Find out what a trade school can teach you to build on a previous degree that you have worked so hard to complete.
